republicans, religion and the triumph of unreason

“18,000 US citizens die every year needlessly, because they can’t access the care they require. That’s equivalent to six 9/11s, every year, year on year. Yet the Republicans have accused the Democrats who are trying to stop all this death by extending healthcare of being “killers” – and they have successfully managed to put them on the defensive.”

As I’ve said elsewhere in the recent past, the modern Republican Party has firmly adopted an anti-intellectual position, where logic and reason hold no sway.

Perhaps a middle-ground solution would be to offer government healthcare to only those who wish for it (appropriately taxing them and not those who wish to opt out) and let the rest depend upon prayer and Jesus to heal their sorry asses. That would seem to satisfy both sides, wouldn’t it? Or do Republicans really not believe in the power of prayer and their Lord Jesus Christ so that they seek medical attention when it is afforded them?

  2. I think that the Republican Party ( what is left of it ) will only get more vicious. Why? Well, one reason is this, things will never go back to the way they were before. They can’t. Nobody can really control the results. No wonder it’s hitting the fan with such force.

People are dying. The right thing to do is save lives. I do not understand anyone with any sort of moral compass being opposed to universal health care. It will save lives. It will save homes. It will save families. To object to it is immoral and incomprehensible to me.

[By the way, I am convinced, if the founding fathers had had any idea what the future held in terms of the medical care sitch we face now, they would have written health care into provisions right along with education and a right to legal representation.]

  5. I tell my boyfriend all the time (he is Republican) it makes no sense that his party wants to force women to have babies they don’t want yet they refuse to provide coverage for all these babies. I call it a modern day enslavement or maybe it’s just a ruse to keep women barefoot and pregnant and helpless.
