The Man in the Red Bandana, Sept 11, Welles Crowther

the man in the red bandana

Welles Crowther, a 24-year-old equities trader widely known as the “Man in the Red Bandana,” carrying an injured person to safety during the September 11 attacks in 2001…..

Welles Crowther was a 24-year-old equities trader working on the 104th floor of the South Tower on September 11, 2001. After Flight 175 struck, he covered his nose and mouth with his red bandana and began helping survivors near the devastated 78th-floor sky lobby. Drawing on his training as a volunteer firefighter, he found a usable stairway, guided injured people through the smoke, and carried a badly wounded woman on his back. Instead of continuing to safety, Crowther repeatedly returned upstairs to help others. Survivors later identified him as the mysterious “man in the red bandana.” He died when the South Tower collapsed.

For months, survivors knew only that a young man wearing a red bandana had appeared through the smoke, calmly giving instructions and leading people toward safety. His identity was confirmed later when survivors recognized Welles Crowther in photographs. His red bandana is now preserved by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
