•NEW : Accelerated Screenwriting : The Crash Course | Begins June 1, 2010
Accelerated Screenwriting : The Crash Course : One month :::PASIC::: online writing course begins Tuesday June 1st. The Crash Course is a take your foot off the brakes month long introduction to screenwriting that covers the foundations of writing for film: Format; structure; characterization; dialogue; subtext; action; description; point of view; scene structure; exposition; film openings; film endings; story; visuals; and plot. This is a no holds barred course taught by professional screenwriter Max Adams [Excess Baggage, The Ladykillers].
Max is the author of The Screenwriter's Survivial Guide: Or, Guerilla Meeting Tactics and Other Acts of War [Warner Books], has woked with Hollywood Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Universal, Tri-Star and Columbia Pictures, is the founder of two international online screenwriting workshops, Left Door and 5150, is a former AFI Alumni reader and WGA online mentor as well as a current Nicholl reader and judge, and is a 2010 recipient of the College of Fine Arts Distinguishd Alumni Award from University of Utah. Scripts and script exerpts will be provided. Some outside film viewing is required. Some short writing exercises are also required.

•NEW : Non-Static Writing | Begins March 9, 2010
Non-Static Writing : 6 Week Workshop begins Tuesday March 9th 2010. This is an online 6 week advanced course on non-static writing taught by yours truly Max Adams. There is a reason movies are called "moving pictures." Because they move. This course is about keeping those pictures moving within a script. Subjects include opening environments, using open and closed environments, moving characters within enclosed environments, using dialogue to create tension within closed environments, and how to kill a scene in under five secondds with an electronic device.

Characterization : 6 Week Workshop begins Tuesday January 5th 2009. This is an online 6 week advanced course on characterization taught by yours truly Max Adams. Subjects include introductions [or authorial intrusion is your friend]; protagonists vs. antagonists; using point of view characters; defining characters through tension; likable vs. empathetic characters; maintaining interest through withholding; and illuminating character through subplots.

Visual Writing : This is an online 6 week advanced course on visual scene writing. The course is taught by yours truly. Subjects include setting locations; visual perspective; the use of space, light and texture; exteriors versus interiors; character introductions; and creating and using visual movement within a scene. Workshop

The
5150 Workshop is an ongoing online screenwriting group
with an emphasis on peer review. The workshop is run by yours truly. To
be admitted to 5150 you must either be known to me personally, i.e. I
know your work, or must submit a writing sample that so impresses me I
cannot help but drag you in the door. Past and current members of my workshops
include three Nicholl winners as well as winners of Austin, Disney, Chesterfield,
Warner Bros, Breckenridge, and many working writers. Chairs are limited.
